All kinds* of things on the net today about women and our rights and equality, or lack therof. Which fits in a bit with something I was thinking about this morning - so here I am posting about it.
This is rather depressing. Just saying.
Cognitively I know that women are just as smart as men; heck I'm inclined to think that they're by and large more so (for admitely biased reasons). However, I realized this morning that I don't instinctually expect them to be when they're someone I see as a partner or potential partner - what's that about? It's clearly related to the fact that I'm attracted to intelligent people. In fact, I'm kind of a snob about it. All of the men I've dated have been smarties; and not just smarties but men who read books because it's fun (I know, people totally do that. Weird, right?) and could generally be considered geeky. So why isn't it the same with women I'm interested in? Why am I surprised when some-her I like turns out to be intelligent?
Is it because of some preconceived notion that I have about the kind of women I'm attracted to? I think that must have something to do with it, and I think that sucks. I wonder if it's not related to my perceptions of equality; one of the reasons that dating women appeals so very much is because I don't worry about being equal with them, or having to prove it. I don't have to worry about who does the dishes or the laundry, or at least I don't feel like I have to fight for my right to not be the assumed one to do those things. I won't mind if a girl opens a door for me because I can see it as a nice gesture and not some sort of sign of dominance or ownership.
Granted - all of these things may very well be in my head. I doubt that a guy who opens a door for me conciously thinks that by doing so he's marking me as his. However I do think that society does and therefore I can't allow it. Sad, but true.
I'm getting off topic - point is: why do automatically assume that any women I'd be interested in would be less intelligent than any man? And, more importantly, how can I fix that? It's a false and terrible assumption - and I gotta stop it.
I'm not saying that I won't continue to check their grammar or how much they read - 'cause I will. However, I'm going to pay more attention to my expectations of people I date. There's no reason to have lower expectations of women. At all. So I'm going to stop it.

*Okay, and seriously!? Here ya go, US, have some women! They're good for cleaning things and cooking things! They'll take care of your kids too! You can do whatever you want with their bodies and the BEST part, US, is that when you're done with them you can just discard them because we're going to give you plenty! Disposable AND fuckable?! Seriously, what's better than that?! ...
So entirely unacceptable. And also where's the backlash? Where's the outrage? It wasn't even a full page story.
I want to remember this one:
I love spam. Every other month I check the general email here at the clinic, most of which is spam. Most of that is spam selling penis enlargement products - which are my favorite. The subject lines of these emails range from the overly simplistic, as in the title of this post (really, is that what my life is missing?!), to the graphic:

Right, that's exactly why that happened. The logic here is amazing! Buddy, if your girlfriend left you for a chick, it wasn't because your penis wasn't big enough, I promise. At least they were kind enough to include a picture to demonstrate the effectiveness of their product.
Now some feminists would be offended by this stuff - and on a certain level I am. My take on this, however, is that these ads are so ridiculous it's not worth the effort to be offended. Besides, I try really hard not to think about the fact that these might actually work. I tell myself that the people for whom these emails are intended, the men who click on the picture of the hot chicks making out because he thinks they want him to drill their juicy pussies with his HUGE penis, are so backward as to not know how to use email. That's got to be the way it works, right?
Yeah - it's nice in my world. None of that pesky reality stuff allowed here.
While reading this book, the following just occurred to me: The "war" against patriarchy would be won if only masturbation really did cause blindness. It's so much more socially acceptable for men to masturbate and so many women are taught that it's not okay for us, while it is for men, that we (women, I mean) would be in a much better place if only it really did make you blind.
(Clearly the above thought is flawed, but it's not altogether terrible on the outside - and if nothing else, I think it's a little funny)
